What is it:
The forms:
Particulate Pollution:
Chemical Air pollution:
Acid Rain:
Ozone pollution:
GreenHouse gases:
- Dust fumes, gases or odors in the air in harmful amounts
- Most of it is caused by humans
- But some is from natural resources
- Any substance in the air causes discomfort, disease, or death to living things
The forms:
- Particulate pollution: soot, ash, dust and smoke
- Chemical pollution: S02, NO2
- Ozone pollution: O3
- Greenhouse pollution: Carbon Dioxide (CO2), methane(CH4)
Particulate Pollution:
- Tiny bits of solid floating in the air. They can be either natural or human-related.
- Natural Particulate: pollen and ash from forest fires or volcanic eruptions
- Human-caused particulate: soot from burning fossil fuels and smoke
Chemical Air pollution:
- Car and truck exhaust
- Most commonly in the form of Sulfur Dioxide and Nitrogen Dioxide
- Sole cause of Acid Rain
- Toxic Fumes from the burning of inorganic materials is another form of Chemical Pollution.
Acid Rain:
- Caused by high concentrations of nitric and Sulfuric acid in the atmosphere.
- Occurs in all biomes and regions of the world: Kills trees and plants in the area, erodes rocks and stones and poisons the entire watershed
Ozone pollution:
- Two types: good and bad
- Good: located high in the atmosphere and creates a protective barrier. This forms naturally
- Bad: located near the earth’s surface. It mixes with Particulate Pollution to form a substance known as smog(smoke and fog)
- Smog forms a haze and cloud over highly polluted cities. In cases it is unsafe to go outside or to breathe the air.
GreenHouse gases:
- They are responsible for the phenomenon of global warming
- The most common: carbon dioxide and methane gases.
- Carbon dioxide is released from burning of fossil fuels
- Methane is released from decomposed plant and animal matter as well as from burps and farts of livestock.
